Frequently asked questions

When do I need the expanded form?

Reverse DNS (ip6.arpa) names, some firewall and database formats and string comparisons need the full, fixed-length form.

Is expanding reversible?

Yes. Both forms describe the same 128-bit address; use the compression tool to shorten it again.
