How to use the IPv6 Compression Tool

Shorten IPv6 addresses to their canonical compressed form (RFC 5952).

  1. 1 Paste one or more IPv6 addresses, one per line.
  2. 2 The compressed form of each address appears instantly.
  3. 3 Copy the results.

Example and practical tips

2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:ff00:0042:8329 compresses to 2001:db8::ff00:42:8329, and 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 becomes ::1.

Frequently asked questions

Can :: appear twice?

No. The double colon may replace only one run of zero groups, or the address would be ambiguous.

Why use the canonical form?

RFC 5952 defines one standard way to write each address, so the same address always looks the same in logs and configs.
