How to Use Base64 Encoder / Decoder

Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 back to text. Switch between standard and URL-safe alphabets and copy the result directly in your browser.

About this tool

Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 back to text (UTF-8 safe).

How to use Base64 Encoder / Decoder

  1. Choose Encode for plain text or Decode for a Base64 string, then paste your input.
  2. Use URL-safe alphabet when the receiving system expects that variant. Review the output or any decoding error.
  3. Copy the result. Use Swap to move the output back into the input for the opposite conversion.

Worked example

The text Hello encodes to SGVsbG8=. Decoding that string returns Hello. Base64 changes the representation of data; it does not make its contents secret.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Anyone with the encoded string can decode it. Do not use Base64 to protect passwords or confidential information.

When should I use the URL-safe alphabet?

Use it when an API or token format requests URL-safe Base64. This variant substitutes characters that otherwise need special handling in URLs. Match the requirements of the receiving system.

Can this decode an image file?

This interface is designed for text. For an encoded image or image data URI, use the separate Base64 to Image tool to preview and download the image.
