Correct serum sodium for high blood glucose with the Hillier (2.4) and Katz (1.6) factors to reveal true hyponatremia or hidden hypernatremia.
About this tool
Sodium corrected for high glucose with the Katz and Hillier formulas.
How to use Corrected Sodium Calculator
- Enter the measured sodium.
- Enter glucose in mg/dL or mmol/L.
- Read the corrected sodium from both formulas.
Worked example
Sodium 130 mmol/L with glucose 600 mg/dL corrects to 142 mmol/L (Hillier), so the low reading is due to hyperglycemia.
Which correction factor is better?
Hillier’s 2.4 mmol/L per 100 mg/dL fits experimental data better above about 400 mg/dL; Katz’s 1.6 is the classic value.
Why does glucose lower sodium?
High glucose draws water out of cells, diluting the sodium in the blood. As glucose falls, sodium rises again.
