How to Use Cubic Feet Calculator

Calculate cubic feet for boxes, rooms and cylinders from dimensions in inches, feet, yards, centimeters or meters, with liters and gallons.

About this tool

Calculate cubic feet for boxes, rooms and cylinders from any units.

How to use Cubic Feet Calculator

  1. Choose the shape and unit.
  2. Enter the dimensions and how many items.
  3. Read the volume in cubic feet and other units.

Worked example

A moving box of 18 × 18 × 24 in holds 4.5 cubic feet.

How to calculate cubic feet

For a rectangular box or room, multiply length by width by height after converting every measurement to feet. A box measuring 3 feet by 2 feet by 1.5 feet has a volume of 9 cubic feet. Square feet measure area, so a floor area alone cannot give volume without a height or depth.

Example using inches

Divide each inch measurement by 12 before multiplying. A 24 by 18 by 12 inch box is 2 by 1.5 by 1 feet, giving 3 cubic feet. Alternatively, calculate cubic inches first and divide by 1,728.

Convert the result and check usable capacity

Divide cubic feet by 27 to obtain cubic yards. Use internal dimensions for usable box capacity and external dimensions for shipping space. Rounded corners, packing gaps and irregular shapes can reduce the usable volume.

How do I convert cubic inches to cubic feet?

Divide by 1,728 (12 × 12 × 12).

How many gallons are in a cubic foot?

About 7.48 US gallons.
