About this tool
The data storage converter changes file and disk sizes between bits and bytes and every decimal unit (kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes), plus the binary units that operating systems often use (kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, tebibytes). It explains why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB on your computer.
How to use Data Storage Converter
- Enter the size and choose its unit.
- Choose the unit to convert to.
- Compare decimal (GB) and binary (GiB) values in the full list.
Worked example
1 GB = 1,000 MB, but 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. A 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 931 GiB.
Convert gigabytes to terabytes
For decimal units, divide GB by 1000. Thus 250 GB = 0.25 TB and 1000 GB = 1 TB. Choose GB and TB in the converter rather than binary units.
Keep binary units separate
For binary units, 1024 GiB = 1 TiB. GB and GiB have different byte counts, so a decimal-to-binary conversion is not the same as changing the prefix.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000³ bytes; a gibibyte (GiB) is 1,024³ bytes, about 7% more. Drive makers use GB, while Windows shows GiB but labels it "GB".
How many bits are in a byte?
Eight. Internet speeds are usually measured in bits per second, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads about 12.5 MB per second.
How big is a terabyte?
One terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, roughly 250,000 photos or 500 hours of HD video.
