Worked example

Why might Eid differ by a day?

Islamic dates depend on the moon being sighted locally, so countries can differ by a day from the Umm al-Qura calendar used here.

How are Diwali and Holi calculated?

From astronomical new and full moons in Indian time, which usually matches almanacs but may differ by a day.
