About this tool

Calculate the hours and minutes between two times or dates, with breaks.

How to use Hours Calculator

  1. Choose two times, or two dates and times.
  2. Enter the start and end, and any unpaid break.
  3. Read the time worked in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.

Worked example

9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break is 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours.

What if the shift ends after midnight?

An end time earlier than the start is counted as the next day.

Why decimal hours?

Payroll systems multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate: 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours.
