About this tool
The ideal body weight calculator estimates a healthy target weight from your height and sex using four well-known formulas: Robinson, Miller, Devine and Hamwi. It shows each result and their average, together with the weight range that gives a healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height, so you can see a sensible range rather than a single number.
How to use Ideal Body Weight Calculator
- Choose metric or imperial units and select your sex.
- Enter your height in centimeters, or in feet and inches.
- Compare the four formula results and the healthy BMI range. Treat them as a range, not a strict target.
Worked example
For a man who is 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) tall, the formulas give between about 68.7 kg (Miller) and 72.0 kg (Hamwi), an average of about 70 kg, while the healthy BMI range is roughly 57–76 kg.
Why do the formulas give different answers?
Each was developed by different researchers from different data, mainly to estimate medication doses. None was designed as a personal weight goal, which is why a range is more useful than any single figure.
Do these formulas work for short people?
They were built for people at least 5 ft (152 cm) tall. For shorter heights the results become less reliable, so the healthy BMI range is a better guide.
Does ideal weight account for muscle?
No. The formulas only use height and sex. Athletes and very muscular people can be perfectly healthy above these weights; body fat percentage is a better measure for them.
