About this tool

Look up NLM and ISO journal title abbreviations, and expand abbreviations.

How to use Journal Abbreviation Finder

  1. Enter one journal title or abbreviation per line.
  2. Choose full title to abbreviation, or the reverse.
  3. Copy the abbreviation, or download all results as CSV.

Worked example

The New England Journal of Medicine → N Engl J Med, and Journal of the American Medical Association → JAMA.

Which abbreviation should I use?

Vancouver and AMA references use the NLM (MEDLINE) abbreviation without full stops. Some journals ask for the ISO 4 form instead.

What if my journal is not found?

Journals not in the NLM Catalog get a suggested abbreviation built from ISO 4 rules. Check it against the journal’s own instructions.
