How to Use Picture Mat Size Calculator

Calculate the mat opening and outer mat or frame size for artwork with even or bottom-weighted borders, and find the nearest standard frame size.

About this tool

Calculate mat board and frame sizes for artwork with even or weighted borders.

How to use Picture Mat Size Calculator

  1. Enter the artwork size and unit.
  2. Enter the mat border and overlap, and choose bottom-weighting.
  3. Read the mat opening, frame size and nearest standard frame.

Worked example

An 8 × 10 in print with 2 in borders and a 1/4 in overlap needs a 7.5 × 9.5 in opening and an 11.5 × 13.5 in mat.

Why overlap the artwork?

A slightly smaller opening holds the art in place so it cannot fall through.

What is bottom-weighting?

A slightly wider bottom border, which looks more balanced on the wall.
