How to Use Mortality Rate Calculator

Calculate crude, cause-specific, age-specific, infant, neonatal and under-5 mortality rates, the maternal mortality ratio and proportional mortality.

About this tool

Crude, cause-specific, infant and maternal mortality rates with CIs.

How to use Mortality Rate Calculator

  1. Choose the type of rate.
  2. Enter the deaths and the population, live births or total deaths.
  3. Read the rate per the standard multiplier with its interval.

Worked example

820 deaths in a mid-year population of 104,000 is a crude death rate of 7.88 per 1,000.

Why can crude death rates mislead?

Older populations have more deaths. Compare populations with age-specific or age-standardized rates.

Is maternal mortality a rate or a ratio?

It is usually a ratio: maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, because live births stand in for pregnancies.
