How to Use Multiplication Calculator

Multiply whole numbers, decimals and negative values online. Check the product and scientific notation, with worked examples for two- and three-digit numbers.

About this tool

The multiplication calculator multiplies numbers exactly, whatever their size. It keeps every digit of very large products and gets decimals exactly right, so 0.1 × 3 gives 0.3. The result is shown in standard and scientific notation, with the number of digits in the answer.

How to use Multiplication Calculator

  1. Enter the first number.
  2. Enter the second number.
  3. Read the product and its scientific notation.

Worked example

125 × 48 = 6,000. Multiplying two 20-digit numbers gives an exact 39- or 40-digit result.

Two-digit worked example

For 23 × 14, split 14 into 10 + 4. The partial products are 230 and 92. Add them to get 322. Enter 23 and 14 above to check the product.

Three-digit worked example

For 125 × 24, calculate 125 × 20 = 2500 and 125 × 4 = 500. Their sum is 3000. This explanation shows the method; the calculator displays the final result.

Decimals and signs

2.5 × 1.2 = 3.0. A positive number times a negative number gives a negative product; two negative numbers give a positive product.

What is a product in math?

The product is the result of multiplying numbers. In 6 × 7 = 42, the product is 42.

How do I multiply decimals?

Multiply as if there were no decimal points, then place the point so the answer has as many decimal places as both numbers together. The calculator does this exactly.

What happens when multiplying negative numbers?

A negative times a positive is negative, and a negative times a negative is positive.
