About this tool
RIPEMD-160 is a 160-bit cryptographic hash function developed in Europe as an open alternative to SHA-1. It is best known for its role in Bitcoin, where addresses are created by hashing a public key with SHA-256 and then RIPEMD-160. Browsers do not include it, so the text is hashed on our server with PHP and nothing is stored.
How to use RIPEMD-160 Hash Generator
- Type or paste your text.
- Copy the 40-character RIPEMD-160 hash when it appears.
- Paste a known hash into the compare box to check a match.
Worked example
The RIPEMD-160 hash of "abc" is 8eb208f7e05d987a9b044a8e98c6b087f15a0bfc, the published test vector for the algorithm.
Can a RIPEMD-160 hash be decrypted?
No. Hashing is one-way: there is no key to reverse it. Short or common inputs can sometimes be found by guessing and comparing hashes, which is why hashes alone should not protect passwords.
Why does a tiny change give a completely different hash?
Hash functions are designed so that changing even one character, or its case, changes the output completely. That makes them good for spotting any modification to data.
What is RIPEMD-160 used for?
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency addresses (as HASH160 = RIPEMD-160 of SHA-256), and some PGP implementations.
