How to Use Screen Test

Test your monitor or phone screen with full-screen red, green, blue, white, black and gray, plus gradients, grids and patterns to spot defects.

About this tool

Test your monitor with full-screen colors, gradients and patterns to spot defects.

How to use Screen Test

  1. Click a color or test pattern to fill the screen.
  2. Click or press → to move through the colors; press Esc to exit.
  3. Look for dead pixels, uneven backlight, color tints and banding.

Worked example

Check a new laptop within its return period: black shows backlight bleed at the edges, and the gray gradient reveals banding.

What is backlight bleed?

Light leaking around the edges of an LCD panel, easiest to see on a black screen in a dark room.

What does the gradient test show?

Visible steps instead of a smooth fade mean the screen shows fewer shades, called banding.
