Create Vancouver (ICMJE/NLM) references for journal articles, books, chapters and web pages, fill them from a DOI and build a numbered reference list.

About this tool

Build Vancouver-style references for journals, books, chapters and websites.

How to use Vancouver Reference Generator

  1. Choose the source type, or enter a DOI and press Fill from DOI.
  2. Check the authors, title, journal abbreviation, year, volume and pages.
  3. Copy the reference or add it to a numbered list to download.

Worked example

Khan AR, Ahmed S, Raza MA. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes in urban Pakistan: a cross-sectional study. J Pak Med Assoc. 2024 Mar;74(3):412-8.

How many authors does Vancouver list?

Up to six. With seven or more, list the first six followed by “et al”.

How are page ranges written?

Repeated leading digits are dropped, so 412–418 becomes 412-8.
