How to Use Word & Character Counter

Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type. Check estimated reading and speaking time with this free online word counter.

About this tool

Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and estimate reading time.

How to use Word & Character Counter

  1. Paste your draft into Your text or type directly in the editor. The counters update as you edit.
  2. Compare Words, Characters and No spaces with the limit for your assignment, description or script.
  3. Check reading and speaking time, then use Top keywords to spot repeated terms. Copy your edited draft from the text box.

Worked example

For example, Hello world contains 2 words, 11 characters and 10 characters without spaces. Blank lines separate paragraphs; a single line break increases the line count.

How are reading and speaking time calculated?

Reading time uses 238 words per minute and speaking time uses 150. These are estimates built into this tool; your pace, pauses and subject matter will change the actual duration.

Why can the count differ from another editor?

This counter groups letters, numbers, apostrophes and hyphens into words. Other editors may split punctuation differently. Character counts use Unicode code points, so a multi-part emoji can count as more than one character.

Is keyword density an SEO score?

No. Top keywords shows frequently repeated terms after filtering short words and common stop words. Use it to review repetition, not to chase a target density.
