JPG vs PNG: Which Format Should You Use?

Choose JPG or PNG for photos, screenshots and transparent graphics. Learn what conversion changes and why converting to PNG does not restore lost detail.

Choose by the picture and its purpose

JPG is often suitable for photographs where a smaller file matters. PNG is useful for graphics, sharp text and images that need transparency. Compare the exported result at its intended display size rather than choosing solely by the extension. A website or submission form may also require a particular format.

Compression and transparency

JPEG uses lossy compression and does not preserve an alpha transparency channel. PNG uses lossless compression and can preserve transparency. When exporting a transparent graphic to JPG, check the background in the resulting file. WebP is another option when the destination supports it.

What converting JPG to PNG does

Conversion creates a new encoding of the pixels available in your source image. It cannot restore detail already removed by JPEG compression. A photograph converted to PNG may become substantially larger without looking sharper. Use the original high quality image when available, especially for repeated edits.

A practical choice for uploads

For a photographed receipt, try JPG and confirm that small text is readable. For a logo that must sit on different backgrounds, use a format that preserves transparency, such as PNG. For a screenshot containing small text, compare PNG with your other available formats before choosing a smaller export.

Convert and verify the result

Open Image Converter, upload your source and choose the destination format. Download the file, open it and inspect transparency, sharp edges and file size. Conversion does not change an image’s composition; use Image Cropper or Image Resizer when the destination also requires different proportions or dimensions.

Put this guide into practice

  • Image Resizer — Resize images to exact pixel dimensions or by percentage.
  • Image Converter — Convert images between PNG, JPG and WEBP formats.
  • Image Compressor — Reduce image file size while keeping visual quality.
