How to use the Chat with PDF
Chat with PDF lets you talk to a document instead of scrolling through it. Open a PDF and ask questions in plain language: get a summary of a long report, find a clause in a contract, pull out every date and amount, or have a dense paper explained in simple terms. Answers are based on the text of your document and mention the page they came from, so you can check them quickly. Your PDF file itself stays on your device: the tool reads its text in your browser and sends only that text, with your questions, to Google Gemini to write each answer.
- 1 Drop a PDF into the upload area or click browse. The tool reads the text of every page in your browser. Nothing is saved on our servers.
- 2 Type a question, or pick a suggestion such as "Summarize this document". Press Enter to send and Shift+Enter for a new line.
- 3 Read the answer and follow up with more questions. The chat remembers the conversation. Use the page numbers to verify important details in the original PDF.
Example and practical tips
Open a 40-page rental agreement and ask "What is the notice period for ending the lease, and on which page?" Then follow up with "Are there any fees if I leave early?" For research papers, try "Summarize the method and main results in five bullet points", then ask about any term you do not understand. For invoices or statements, "List every amount with its date" turns a long document into a quick checklist.

How accurate are the answers?
Answers are generated by AI from the text of your PDF and are usually accurate for clear, text-based documents, but AI can misread tables, miss context or make mistakes. The answer mentions page numbers where possible, so check anything important, such as legal, medical or financial details, against the original document.
Will it make things up if the answer is not in my PDF?
The AI is instructed to answer only from your document and to say when the document does not contain the answer, instead of guessing. No AI is perfect, so treat answers as a fast way to find information and verify the key facts yourself.
Is my document private?
Your PDF file never leaves your device and nothing is stored on our servers. To write each answer, the extracted text and your questions are sent to Google Gemini. Avoid using the tool for highly confidential documents, and see our privacy policy for details.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
The tool needs selectable text. A scanned PDF that is only an image of pages has no text to read, so the tool will tell you it cannot chat with it. Run the scan through an OCR tool first to add a text layer.
How long can my PDF be?
Most documents work in full. Very long PDFs, roughly over 200 pages of dense text, are trimmed to the first pages that fit, and the tool shows which pages are included. Split the PDF with the PDF splitter to chat with later sections.
Can I ask in other languages?
Yes. Ask in any language and the AI replies in the language you write in, even if the document is in a different language.
