How to use the Punycode Converter

Convert international domain names (IDN) to Punycode and back.

  1. 1 Choose Unicode to Punycode or the reverse.
  2. 2 Paste one domain or URL per line.
  3. 3 Copy the results. Use Swap to convert them back.

Example and practical tips

münchen.de becomes xn--mnchen-3ya.de, the form DNS and SSL certificates use. Pasting xn--e1afmkfd.xn--p1ai with the reverse direction gives пример.рф.

Frequently asked questions

Why does DNS need Punycode?

DNS only supports ASCII letters, digits and hyphens, so international names are encoded into that alphabet with the xn-- prefix.

Can Punycode be used for phishing?

Yes. Look-alike characters from other scripts can imitate real brands. Browsers show the xn-- form for suspicious mixes.
