Trace every redirect hop of a URL with status codes (301, 302, 307, 308) and the final destination.
- 1 Enter the URL exactly as visitors or old links use it, including http:// if relevant.
- 2 Click Trace redirects.
- 3 Read the numbered chain and the analysis. Fix temporary redirects that should be permanent and shorten long chains.
Example and practical tips
http://example.com → https://example.com → https://www.example.com is two hops. Pointing the first URL straight at https://www.example.com saves a round trip for every visitor.
Frequently asked questions
Which redirect is best for SEO?
Use 301 (or 308) for permanent moves so search engines pass ranking signals to the new URL. Use 302 or 307 only for temporary changes.
How many redirects are too many?
Keep it to one where possible. Search engines follow a few hops, but each one slows the page and chains over five may not be followed.
