How to use the XML Sitemap Validator
Validate an XML sitemap or sitemap index and review its URLs, dates and errors.
- 1 Enter the sitemap URL, or just the website to check /sitemap.xml.
- 2 Click Validate sitemap.
- 3 Fix any errors, then submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Example and practical tips
A sitemap with lastmod values such as 29/09/2026 fails the date check. Change them to the W3C format 2026-09-29 so search engines can read them.
Frequently asked questions
What are the sitemap limits?
Each sitemap may hold up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites split URLs across several sitemaps listed in a sitemap index.
Do priority and changefreq matter?
Google ignores them. An accurate lastmod date is the most useful optional field.
