How to use the Sales Tax Calculator

The sales tax calculator works in both directions. Add tax to a price to find the total you will pay, or remove tax from a total to find the original price and the tax amount. It works for US sales tax, GST in Pakistan, India or Australia, VAT in the UK, Europe or the Gulf, and any other percentage-based tax.

  1. 1 Choose whether your price is before tax or already includes tax.
  2. 2 Enter the price and the tax rate.
  3. 3 Read the tax amount, the price before tax and the total with tax.

Example and practical tips

Adding 17% GST to 100 gives a tax of 17 and a total of 117. Removing 17% from a total of 117 gives back the original price of 100.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove tax from a price?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. For 17% tax, 117 ÷ 1.17 = 100. Subtracting 17% of 117 would give the wrong answer.

Is VAT the same as sales tax?

Both are taxes on sales, but VAT is collected at each stage of the supply chain while US sales tax is charged only at the final sale. The math for a single price is the same.

Why do tax rates vary?

Rates depend on the country, state or province and sometimes the type of product. Some items are exempt or taxed at a reduced rate.
