Measure in a consistent unit
Measure the room’s interior length and width. For feet and inches, convert inches to a fraction of a foot: 6 inches = 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft. A measurement of 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, not 12.6 ft. Keep your measurement precision until the final result.
Calculate a rectangular area
Area = length × width. A room 12.5 ft long and 10 ft wide has an area of 125 square feet. Use Square Feet Calculator to enter the measurements and check the total. An area measurement is two-dimensional; do not use it as a volume without a depth.
Split an irregular room into simple shapes
For an L-shaped room, divide the floor into two non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each area and add them. Alternatively, calculate the enclosing rectangle and subtract the missing corner. Draw a quick sketch with labeled measurements so you do not double-count overlapping sections.
Keep material allowance separate
Measured area and purchasing quantity are different. For 125 square feet with an illustrative 10% material allowance, the planning amount is 137.5 square feet. Choose the actual allowance based on the material, layout, cuts and supplier guidance. Check pack coverage and round up to whole packs when purchasing.
Use the tool that matches the surface
Tile Calculator can help with tile quantities, while Paint Calculator works with paint coverage assumptions. Floor area does not directly equal wall area; wall estimates need height, perimeter and openings. Recheck units and the surface being measured before relying on a quantity estimate.
