About this tool
Shorten IPv6 addresses to their canonical compressed form (RFC 5952).
How to use IPv6 Compression Tool
Paste one or more IPv6 addresses, one per line.
The compressed form of each address appears instantly.
Copy the results.
Worked example
2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:ff00:0042:8329 compresses to 2001:db8::ff00:42:8329, and 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 becomes ::1.
Can :: appear twice?
No. The double colon may replace only one run of zero groups, or the address would be ambiguous.
Why use the canonical form?
RFC 5952 defines one standard way to write each address, so the same address always looks the same in logs and configs.
