How to Use IPv6 Expand Tool

Expand shortened IPv6 addresses to the full form with all eight groups of four hexadecimal digits, for reverse DNS, databases and firewall rules.

About this tool

Expand shortened IPv6 addresses to the full 8-group, 32-digit form.

How to use IPv6 Expand Tool

  1. Paste one or more compressed IPv6 addresses, one per line.
  2. Each expanded address appears instantly.
  3. Copy the results.

Worked example

fe80::202:b3ff:fe1e:8329 expands to fe80:0000:0000:0000:0202:b3ff:fe1e:8329, and ::1 expands to seven groups of 0000 followed by 0001.

When do I need the expanded form?

Reverse DNS (ip6.arpa) names, some firewall and database formats and string comparisons need the full, fixed-length form.

Is expanding reversible?

Yes. Both forms describe the same 128-bit address; use the compression tool to shorten it again.
