How to Use Subtraction Calculator

Subtract one number from another exactly, including decimals, negatives and very large numbers, and see the difference and absolute difference. Free.

About this tool

The subtraction calculator finds the exact difference between two numbers. It works with whole numbers, decimals, negative numbers and numbers of any length, without the rounding errors of ordinary floating-point calculators. It also shows the absolute difference, which is useful when you only care how far apart two values are.

How to use Subtraction Calculator

  1. Enter the number to subtract from (the minuend).
  2. Enter the number to subtract (the subtrahend).
  3. Read the difference, the absolute difference and the scientific notation.

Worked example

1,000 − 375.25 = 624.75. Swapping the numbers gives −624.75, while the absolute difference stays 624.75.

What are the minuend and subtrahend?

In 10 − 3 = 7, the minuend is 10 (the number you start with), the subtrahend is 3 (the number taken away) and the difference is 7.

What is the absolute difference?

It is the distance between two numbers without a sign, so the absolute difference between 3 and 10 is 7 whichever you subtract from which.

Is the result exact with decimals?

Yes. The calculator uses exact decimal arithmetic, so there are no tiny rounding errors.
