Example decision

Compare JPEG, WebP and AVIF for a photograph. For logos, consider SVG or a transparent raster format. Inspect fine screenshot text when choosing lossy encoding.

Conversion limits

JPEG to PNG cannot recover discarded detail. JPEG removes transparency. Preserve originals and verify animation when converting.
